INTRAVENOUS SEDATION

What is Intravenous sedation?
A technique in which we administer drugs to make you drowsy, relaxed and forgetful but remain conscious. This enables dental work to be carried out without anxiety and often with little recollection of the procedure. It is not a general anaesthetic as you are breathing independently and remain awake.

How quickly does the sedation work?
The effects start within seconds and depending on the length of the procedure, the drugs will be topped up as required.

Will I be asleep during my treatment?
IV sedation does not typically make you completely unconscious like general anaesthesia. You will be deeply relaxed, may drift in and out of sleep, and will likely have little or no recollection of the procedure. However, you will still be responsive to the dentist if needed.
Will I have any pain?
During your treatment you should experience no pain as we administer local anaesthetic in the mouth after the sedation has been given.

How will I feel afterwards?
You will feel drowsy and most patients like to sleep when they get home. The effects gradually wear off over 12 hours. You will need an able bodied adult to escort you home after the procedure.

Is intravenous sedation safe?
Yes, IV sedation is very safe when administered by a trained professional. Your vital signs (like heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels) will be closely monitored throughout the procedure to ensure your safety.

Who is a good candidate for intravenous sedation?
IV sedation is ideal for patients with dental anxiety, those undergoing lengthy or complex procedures, or individuals with a low pain threshold, sensitive gag reflex, or difficulty sitting still in the dental chair.

What medications are used for intravenous sedation?
We use medications like benzodiazepines (e.g. midazolam) to induce relaxation and may combine them with other drugs for pain relief or additional sedation. The type of medication is tailored to your needs and medical history.

Will I need someone with me after the procedure?
Yes, you will need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you after your procedure, as the sedative effects can linger, and you may feel groggy.

How does IV sedation compare to other sedation methods?
IV sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation compared to oral sedation or nitrous oxide ("laughing gas"). It acts quickly and allows the sedation level to be adjusted throughout the procedure for optimal comfort.
